True coloursA tribute to Stonewall July 2012
Creating the artwork for Halifax Pride in 2009 was special challenge. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City; a touchstone in the struggle for LGBTQ rights, often referred to as the birth of the gay rights movement.
We knew how important it was to pay tribute to the struggles and triumphs of our brothers and sisters. Their powerful actions paved the way for our freedoms today. We wanted to recognize this history while allowing celebration and vibrance to shine through.
Through our research, we came across this video by Solange which perfectly captured the balance of history and celebration we were looking for. With gritty halftone images of war, riots, violence flooded with colourful splashes of colour and movement… THIS became the perfect jumping point.
